Although the risk of exposure due to cross-contamination (transmission of infectious disease from one person to another) is higher in schools, the workplace, and other public areas, our orthodontic team still places a great emphasis on clinical sterilization and infection control procedures.
Unlike general dentistry, orthodontic treatment is non-invasive in nature. However, we still follow the same sterilization guidelines known as Universal Precautions that are set forth by the Alberta Dental Association and Canadian Dental Association. All metal orthodontic instruments, used in the mouth, undergo heat sterilization with state-of-the-art equipment (Statim 5000).
Spore testing is carried out weekly to ensure the highest level of sterilization. All plastic and electronic instruments undergo cold sterilization procedures. As well, cold surface disinfection is carried out on counter tops, chairs, and dental delivery units between patient treatments. We NEVER re-use orthodontic appliances, components, or auxiliary devices placed in an individual patient’s mouth.
Our team actively partakes in continuing education courses to keep our knowledge, in the area of sterilization and infection control, at the forefront of healthcare providers. The importance of continually updating our knowledge in sterilization and infection control protocols is for the sake of your protection, as well as our own.
