We take the time to listen to your concerns before recommending treatment. This allows us to educate you on your treatment options, risks, alternatives, and how they relate to your concerns and overall health.
We take the time to make sure you understand each option and what is involved, realistically how long it will take, how much it will cost (including payment options), and the risks of no treatment. This way you can make an informed decision about your or your child’s orthodontic care and know what to expect…. The only surprise we like to see is: early completion of treatment!
We consider you and your dentist’s lifetime strategy for your or your child’s dental health. This includes how treatment will affect the Airway, Facial Balance, Growth and Development, and future dentistry planned. We then take the time to make sure you know all of your options and how they relate to your concerns and your overall health. This ensures you’re your expectations are met and minimizes surprises.
Have you ever considered that people can go weeks without food, and days without water, but they can only go about 4 minutes without air before brain damage begins? This demonstrates how crucial oxygen is relative to food and water for our survival. The front of the airway that supplies this oxygen is the back of the tongue. If the space for the tongue to “live” in the mouth is decreased (by extraction of teeth, retraction of jaws with headgear), the airway is decreased. On the other hand, if the space for the tongue is increased (by arch development creating more oral volume) it can come forward and the airway is increased. This can be important for prevention of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in patients of all ages.
We believe the root cause of teeth and jaw problems is poor resting oral posture. This is often secondary to an airway problem and related to mouth breathing rather than nasal breathing. Signs include gummy smile, red and inflamed gums, dark circles under the eyes, forward head posture, snoring, bed wetting, tooth grinding, inability to concentrate or focus, and slower than average eating (they are usually mouth breathing while eating).
Traditionally, orthodontists pull teeth to relieve dental crowding and utilize “old school” headgear to pull the upper jaw back to meet a smaller lower jaw. Although this is considered the standard of care by many in the profession, we offer less invasive non-extraction treatment that develops the arches making room for all the teeth. These treatments include Biobloc Orthotropics and light wire functional appliances including Crozats, Kenrotts, and ALFs. By making room for all the teeth and the tongue, we can maximize the treatment effect on the airway, facial balance, and esthetics of the smile.
Our DNA (also known as our genetics) is affected by the environment. When it comes to the growth and development of the face, jaws, and teeth, the environment is resting oral posture. The affect of resting oral posture on the DNA can be positive or negative at any age. One analogy is that of a card game: consider the genetics of an individual as “the hand they are dealt” and the environment as “how they play their hand”. By addressing resting oral posture and utilizing treatments that do not extract teeth and retract the jaws, we create an environment that allows for the expression of the genetic potential for the individual.
Dr. Ward will not only do a comprehensive exam, take time to present all treatment options, but he will also take the time see you at each visit to evaluate your or your child’s individual response to treatment and make changes accordingly.
